The so-called lab leak theory was considered fringe by the mainstream media in early 2020. Facebook and other social media companies banned the content from being shared on their platforms until May 2021.
Recently, the Department of Energy, following a classified intelligence report had concluded that the virus had "most likely emerged from a lab leak in Wuhan, China".
Elon Musk, CEO of Twitter, commented on the matter following the story in late February of 2023.

The Global Times, a state-run publication in China, warned Musk that he could be "breaking the pot of China." The saying is similar to the expression "to bite the hand that feeds you," according to CNBC’s Eunice Yoon, who was the first to report on the warning.
A cryptic, thinly veiled threat, claiming that Musk's perpetuating the lab leak theory could harm their relationship with TESLA. They were quick to point out that the electric vehicle maker maintains a gigafactory campus in Shanghai, China, the company's second-largest market.
