Thomas Sowell is an American economist, author, essayist, social theorist, political analyst, scholar, and the Rose & Milton Friedman Senior Fellow at Stanford's Hoover Institution.

Born on June 30th, 1930, to an underprivileged family in Gastonia, North Carolina--a segregated city in Gaston County--Thomas Sowell climbed the intellectual ranks. After scoring remarkably high on college board exams while attending Howard Univeristy, a historically Black research college in Washington D.C., he earned admission into Harvard Univeristy.

Graduating magna cum laude from Harvard University in 1958, Sowell earned his bachelor's degree in economics. The following year, he received his master's degree from Columbia University. Studying under George Stigler, who would later win the Nobel Prize in Economics, Sowell earned his Ph.D. at the University of Chicago.

Author of over 45 books, dozens of essays, and a nationally syndicated column, Thomas Sowell is an established American writer. His most notable works include Basic Economics, Intellectuals and Society, Applied Economics, Discrimination and Disparities, Economic Facts and Fallacies, Conflict of Vision, Housing Boom and Bust, Inside American Education, and Affirmative Action Around the World.

Thomas Sowell has taught economics at Amherst College, Cornell University, Howard University and the University of California at Los Angeles. He has won awards for his intellectual and academic achievements, including the Bradley Prize and the National Humanities Medal.
